Better Than the Movies by Lynn Painter

Queen B’s Decree: Lynn Painter YA books just hit me so hard somehow. They are simultaneously funny, romantic, sweet, and make my heart hurt in a good way.

Liz is a character that you can’t help but feel for. She loves romcoms and romantic movies, because it’s something that helps her feel connected to her late mom. Does she sometimes miss the forest for the trees? Yes. But her good intentions win out, despite the mistakes she makes.

And her relationship with Wes was so fun. His mannerisms and actions towards Liz soften so much, and it’s so obvious how much he cares for her. But he never loses his mischievous streak.

What really struck with me was the true grief Liz went through. It’s so true, how it comes in waves. And while Liz may have thought that she was managing it well, it’s proof that sometimes it surprises us. But her learning how to open up to her support systems made me actually cry (on my lunch break, no less!) but squeezed my heart.

Ugh, such a wonderful book and I need to read more from Lynn Painter.
