They Say It’s a River by J.M. Lefevre

Queen B’s Decree: They Say It’s a River is set in the early 1990’s (1992 to be exact!) and focuses between two teens during summer break: Jake and Leah. Both teens are visiting family in the same small Wisconsin town over the summer and their lives start to intersect.

Like I mentioned, this story is set in 1992 and I can tell the author did their research. There are many references and nuances that remind you of the time period (and some I googled just to be sure, and don’t worry—they were accurate!). And even if I didn’t experience all that happens to Leah and Jake, I felt such a sense of nostalgia. It really made me homesick, somehow, for an easier and less complicated time.

There’s a hint of a romance and y’all know that is my bread and butter so I ate it up. I liked the ambiguity of the ending as it felt more realistic and left it open for more story.

Overall, an enjoyable read from a debut author.
