A Vow in Vengeance by Jaclyn Rodriguez

Queen B’s Decree: A Vow in Vengeance was such an unusual premise.

Rune, after all her family has been taken by the fae and magic-filled, forces her way into the immortal lands with a (maybe foolhardy??) plan to find her family and escape. And it’s there she learns what really happens in those lands, where she is changed and given her own magic and forced to room with the prince.

And the magical system is so interesting. It’s based on tarot cards, of which I know very little about, so I was enthralled.

But what really snagged me was the interactions between Rune and Draven. It’s the perfect slow burn of literal enemies-to-lovers (Rune wants to kill all of the immortal royalty and do you blame her??) where their relationship forms slowly—and a bit reluctantly—so it feels more real.

The narrators really sold me; Raquel Beattie and Gregory Salinas did such a good job. Spoiler alert: I cried on the plane so don’t mind me over in my window seat, trying to hide my tears. The twist and the mystery towards the end hooked me and I can’t wait to dive into the next book!
