A Collection of DNFs: Volume Five

Sometimes my brain just says no to books. And a better person might set them aside and come back. But alas, that’s not me. As always, these books just weren’t for me at this moment in time but might be the perfect book for you.

✨Rewind to Us by Molly Morris — Sometimes I read YA and I love it and sometimes I read it and feel like an old grandpa yelling at kids to get off my lawn. It was the latter with Rewind to Us. All unexplained magic aside, you have literally one chance to rewind your life to change your future…and you use it when you are 18 years old? With a crush, not even someone you already had a real relationship with? No thanks.

✨The Ripple Effect by Maggie North — My real life job might have affected my enjoyment of this one. Stellar is an ex-emergency room physician who burnt out during COVID…and it’s too accurate? I didn’t even have direct patient care (I could hide in an office) and I still don’t like thinking about that period of my life. Add in an extremely angry, unlikable FMC Stellar and a too-nice doormat MMC, Lyle, and I just am not having fun while reading…thus goodbye.

✨Bed and Breakup by Susie Dumond — I fully admit, that the second chance trope is not a favorite. When this one starts with two ex-wives both staying at their co-owned property (after 7 years apart), I wasn’t super excited. And when there was nothing but a ton of animosity between them? I just couldn’t. My brain just can’t deal with this kind of angsty trope right now. Sorry, y’all.

✨Unexpectedly Yours by C. Chilove — There wasn’t anything necessarily wrong with this one, I just couldn’t get into it. Carrah was immature and childish at times, and both her and Chris acted ridiculously unprofessional. And I found I just wasn’t that invested in all the rich people problems. Even at about 55-60%, there was no real inklings of romance and no one’s personality had improved enough for me to stick with it.

✨Not Safe for Work by Nisha J. Tuli — I am a STEM girly, so reading about someone who seems to hate being in STEM (albeit, she has legitimate reasons to dislike her job and career) just isn’t super fun. And Tris is just not a character I could connect with. She seemed to alternate from body betrayal syndrome and extreme hatred for Rafe and after a while I sat there wondering why I was still listening.
