A Collection of DNFs: Volume Three

I think the older I get, the less willing I am to continue reading something I’m not enjoying. As always, this doesn’t mean that these books won’t be a winner for you—it just wasn’t the right book for me right now.

Flirty Dancing by Jennifer Moffatt — I’m all for a slow burn, but not a “one of the main characters is still making out and in a relationship with not the other MC at 60% of the book” kind of slow burn. Is it so much to ask to read a book about the romance between the predefined main characters?

Any Trope But You by Victoria Lavine — This book was a little too extra or over the top for me. I couldn’t believe the response to the ‘scandal’ at the beginning, and the FMC just continued to annoy me. When she got lost on the way to the lodge, then argued against an escort back afterwards—I knew I was done with her TSTL (too stupid to live, coined by Queen J) ways.

While the Duke Was Sleeping by Samara Parrish — There wasn’t anything wrong with this one, I just wasn’t interested in the main characters. Cordelia was awful, Rhett was a womanizer and I didn’t like how he spoke about women, and Della had potential but I couldn’t get past my inattention. While I loved the Sandra Bullock movie, it wasn’t enough to keep me reading.

Once More From the Top by Emily Layden — This felt like Taylor Swift fanfic. A New England teen girl gets her break into country music and Nashville when she’s a teenager. She dates a football player. I could maybe have gotten past that had Dylan (our TSwift…note the gender neutral names) been a likable character at all. Add in some slow pacing and I was a quitter.
